I love these Philips bulbs which look exactly like traditional incandescents - the whole bulb lights up rather than just the top half - but are energy saving LEDs.

They are, to use an old Metropol word, fab.

Despite the image, the Philips logo isn’t on the side of the bulb but on the top in bronze type - again, just like the old bulbs. Fab.

I use similar Philips LEDs that are the shape of traditional bulbs and they're fantastic.

Interesting seeing how things have moved forward. I've filled my flat with RGB+CCT lightbulbs which go from a really bright and pleasing regular tungsten warmth to rich, saturated colours and pastel shades.



Mostly theres a combination of colour and regular tungsten white in use - they can be grouped and run off smart assistants with a bit of pissing around, although I tend to just use a remote in the living room or lounge and one in the bedroom. These all run off 2.4Ghz wifi although I see there are Bluetooth mesh versions available now.

For years working in entertainment lighting, wireless DMX (the 512 channel control signal for lighting equipment) was a bit of a
Holy Grail. It was flaky and expensive. Obviously not now. Lighting on set is now iPad app driven (albeit usually tethered to a hardware console), but more than 75% of on set lighting is now LED based, and much of it is lithium battery powered. Extraordinary to see the pivot. We still manage to consume hundreds, of amps of power everywhere, but its a lot less than it used to be.

I'm very interested in the individually addressable LED strip lights that allow cool animations and colour chasing. Has anyone set this up at home?

My kitchen, of the no window + 5x GU10 fame, has now been upgraded to Philips Hue bulbs with a motion sensor and its the best thing I've done in ages. Being able to just leave them to turn themselves on / off and have them come on dimmer at night is a real timesaver.

The Hue app itself though is a bit dumb and could do with some more options. I'd like the ability to have three or four time periods not just daytime/nighttime options and have different lighting levels for each. 100% is too bright for 11pm but the 30% i have them at overnight is also too dull for 6:45am.

I've got a mix of tapo sockets and amazon sockets for the sidelights, would not buy the amazon ones again tbh. It'd be nice to have a simple remote control for those so I can easily turn them on from the sofa without having to use my phone. It's the only thing that's kept some lights on old fashioned RF remote sockets rather than wifi.

Get Ikea Tradfri sockets and control everything through the Hue ecosystem, that's what I do now. Things I don't want connected to the lighting (fans in the living room for example) go in a separate 'room' on Hue so separate switches/buttons/shortcuts control them. Hue in every room, motion sensors in the hallway (just a subtle/dim purple, enough to see your way but no more - press a button for more), bathroom and kitchen.

Christmas lights (and the other year-round fairy lights the Mrs likes in the bedroom) on the same control as lighting for the room is fabulous.

They aren't as saturated as they look in the phone pics below, they seem to be warm white LEDs inside a colour plastic envelope and they very closely mimic the sets you might have had in the 1980s, but at a fraction of the power consumption and fragility - they certainly have that very pleasing tungsten lamp glow when I tested them. I'll get my proper camera out and see if I can more closely match the colours.





for £22 I am pleased with them... shame there is only 40 lights on a string, seems like you need to buy 2 to cover a 6ft tree.

I know this is a dumb question, but I've been looking for an old PIF which has an old lady who tries to put a new lightbulb with a stool, only for her to fall off the bloody thing and send the lightbulb flying. It had some celebrity with a Mancunian accent (who says aye up frequently) narrating it.
I can't seem to find it on YouTube as I have the memory of a goldfish.
